The Alvin Community College Veterans Services department is honored to serve military
veterans and their families by providing quality educational opportunities for a diverse
community of learners to thrive in an evolving world. We thank you for your service
and sacrifice.
What We Do
The Veterans Service department helps veterans and their families gain access to their
state and local veterans benefits. We assist veterans with applying for benefits,
admission to the college, advising services and course selection. Referrals to Student
Accessibility Services (SAS) and Counseling resources are also provided. We provide
enrollment information to the VA, monitor satisfactory process and report any issues
to the VA in a timely manner. A Veterans only break room and a veterans student organization
is also sponsored by this Department.
This educational institution will not impose any penalty, including the assessment
of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries or other institutional facilities,
or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered
individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations
to the institution due to the delayed disbursement of funding from the VA under Chapter
31 or 33.

GI Benefits
- Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill®
- The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30) provides up to 36 months of educational
benefits to service members with at least two years of active duty. This benefit is
typically payable for 10 years following a service member’s release from active duty.

- Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation
- The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30) provides up to 36 months of educational
benefits to service members with at least two years of active duty. This benefit is
typically payable for 10 years following a service member’s release from active duty.
- The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30) provides up to 36 months of educational
benefits to service members with at least two years of active duty. This benefit is
typically payable for 10 years following a service member’s release from active duty.
- Chapter 33 Post 9-11
- The Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) provides benefits for students who served in the
military on active duty for at least 90 aggregate days after September 10, 2001, or
if the student was discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You
must have received an honorable discharge. This benefit provides up to 36 months of
educational benefits, payable for up to 15 years after release from active duty. Some
individuals are also eligible to transfer their Chapter 33 benefits to an eligible
dependent.
- The Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) provides benefits for students who served in the
military on active duty for at least 90 aggregate days after September 10, 2001, or
if the student was discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You
must have received an honorable discharge. This benefit provides up to 36 months of
educational benefits, payable for up to 15 years after release from active duty. Some
individuals are also eligible to transfer their Chapter 33 benefits to an eligible
dependent.
- Chapter 35 Survivors Dependent Educational Benefits
- The Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) provides education and training
opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled
due to a service-related condition or eligible dependents of veterans who died while
on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition. This program typically
offers up to 45 months of educational benefits.

- The Montgomery GI Bill® for Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) provides education and
training benefits to eligible members of the Selected Reserve. Selected Reserve includes
the Air Force Reserve, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, the
Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined
by the Selected Reserve components, and the VA makes payments for the program. Eligibility
is for up to 36 months of benefits but typically ends on the day the reservist leaves
the Selected Reserve.

- Chapter 1607 Montgomery GI Bill® for selective reserves called up to active duty in
response to war or national emergency
- The Reserve Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 1607) is a program that provides educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or order to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. This program provides either educational benefits or increased benefits to Reservists who qualify, specifically those who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001.

Hazlewood Act: Benefits for Eligible Texas Veterans
The Hazlewood Exemption Act is a Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption and required fee charges at Texas public institutions of higher education. The exemption does not include living expenses, books, supplies, travel, and non-tuition related fees. The information below lists the ways you may qualify for the Hazlewood Exemption along with the documentation you must submit in order to be considered for the benefit. For more information on the Hazlewood Act and eligibility requirements, please visit the Texas Veterans Commission website.
- Hazlewood tuition exemption provides up to 150 credit hours of tuition exemption.
- Hazlewood Legacy Act allows qualified Texas veterans to transfer any unused hours to their dependent child.
- A widow or dependent child of a service member killed in action, or who has been deemed 100% service connected disabled, may also qualify for the Hazlewood exemption.
